Stefan Sagmeister discusses the “7 Rules for Making More Happiness”. The subject of his speech was how to successfully obtain overall happiness. He believes that there is seven rules people should follow for making more happiness. The first one being, think without pressure. The goal to feeling happy about the result of your final product is to not set a deadline. Take your time to create happiness do not limit yourself by creating a deadline. The next rule involves traveling to new places because it can influence/inspire you to do something and that something can be anywhere in this world. Similarly, the third rule, using a wide variety of tools and techniques can also inspire an individual to fond their happiness by discovering a technique that fits their personality like a puzzle piece. Furthermore, the next rule states, working on projects that matter to you. It is simply obvious that if you work on a content you are truly passionate about you are more likely to be happier. The next is to have things come back from the printer well done, meaning having great end results. One must put hard work into something that makes them happy so that way they can end up with great end results and become happier. The next rule is to receive feedback from others. This way you can visually see the impact you are making on other people and also improve your happiness. Lastly, designing a project that feels party brand new and partly familiar. This way you see a new point of view and develop a better understanding about a subject. Sagmeister believes that by following these rules a person become the true form of themselves because the end result of all these rules leads to true happiness. He wants us to realize that silly things can easily drag us away from our path to happiness but by being true to ourselves we can secure our path. Just like the Beat Generation authors. They strongly believed in finding happiness within oneself rather than in material goods. For example one of the most famous Beat Generation author, Jack Kerouac, said, “Write for the world to read and see yr exact pictures of it”(Belief and Technique for Modern Prose). Kerouac is basically saying that do whatever makes you feel content with life and let the world appreciate you for that. Do not write about what the world wants to her because then you are delivering happiness to the world instead of yourself. This is something I am personally passionate about. All I want in life is to be happy in whatever it is I decide to do. I do not want to live with feeling of regret, letting someone else down, or letting someone other than me plan my future. It is a part of the American Dream to be happy with the way you are living life and so by following these rules obtaining the American Dream should feel more possible.
